NISEP at Casino High School 2013

NISEP at Casino High School 2013

A group of senior Goori students began the day at 10am with an interactive science show, demonstrating fascinating chemistry experiments with common household products, introducing audience members to some creepy crawlies and investigating the world on a microscopic level.

This was followed by a discussion led by representatives from NISEP and Yaegl Elders on the importance of culture and community in education and the lessons they’ve learned from their experience working with Maclean High School over the past eight years.

NISEP began in 2005 as a collaboration between university scientists and Yaegl Elders in Maclean to address the community’s concerns about the disengagement of their youth in education.

Since then the program has gone nation-wide, encouraging other schools and universities to build partnerships with local indigenous communities and sharing their simple, yet effective method of student engagement.
